Prayer for Those Who Are in Darkness and in Bondage to Sin

A Call to Prayer During the Halloween Season

Why We Pray

Every October, our streets fill with skeletons, ghosts, witches, and images of death. Many consider it harmless entertainment. But Christians should be honest. The culture around us is becoming increasingly fascinated with occultism, the demonic, and darkness. Behind the costumes and decorations lies a spiritual reality that the Bible takes seriously.

Scripture does not call us to be afraid, nor does it call us to look down on our neighbors. It calls us to pray. Most of the people around us are not our enemies. They are captives. The Apostle Paul writes that “the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God."(2 Corinthians 4:4).

This is a time that reminds us how dark the world is. And it also reminds us how brightly the Gospel shines.

The Seriousness of Darkness

The Bible soberly describes life apart from Christ:
  • Spiritually dead: “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked” (Ephesians 2:1–2).
  • In bondage: “Everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin” (John 8:34).
  • Blind and lost: “People loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil” (John 3:19).
  • Captive: Unbelievers are caught in “the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will” (2 Timothy 2:26).

This is not simply a description of “bad people out there.” This was true of every one of us until Christ found us. Remembering this keeps us humble and makes our prayers compassionate.

The Hope of the Gospel

Darkness never has the final word. “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:5).

Jesus came “to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed” (Luke 4:18). At the cross, He “disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him” (Colossians 2:15). God “has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son” (Colossians 1:13).

No addiction, no involvement in the occult, and no rebellion is stronger than the Savior. If He saved us, He can save anyone.

How to Pray

1. Pray That God Would Open Blind Eyes
Only God can give spiritual sight. Ask Him to shine in people’s hearts “to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (2 Corinthians 4:6).

2. Pray for Conviction and Repentance
Ask the Holy Spirit to convict the world “concerning sin and righteousness and judgment” (John 16:8). Pray that God would grant people “repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth” and that they would escape “the snare of the devil” (2 Timothy 2:25–26).

3. Pray for Those Involved in Occult Practices and Spiritual Deception
Pray for those involved in witchcraft, tarot and other forms of divination, those who consult psychics and mediums, those drawn to spiritism, or anything else that opens the door to darkness (Deuteronomy 18:10–12). Ask the Lord to break the power of deception and set people free, as He did in Ephesus, where new believers publicly burned their books of magic (Acts 19:18–20).

4. Pray for Those Bound by Sinful Habits
Many people are enslaved by addictions, sexual sin, anger, bitterness, fear, or despair. Pray that they would encounter the One who says, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36).

5. Pray for Specific People by Name
Make your prayers personal. Think of relatives, neighbors, coworkers, classmates, and the children who will knock on your door this month. Write down their names and pray for them every day throughout October.

6. Pray for Courage and Love in the Church
Ask God to make us light, not merely critics (Matthew 5:14–16). Pray for opportunities to share the Gospel “with gentleness and respect” (1 Peter 3:15). Pray that our homes would be warm, welcoming, and filled with the love of Christ.

7. Pray With Confidence in Christ’s Victory
We do not pray as though the outcome is uncertain. “He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4). Pray with faith, because Christ has already overcome.

A Prayer You Can Use

Heavenly Father,

We come before You remembering that we, too, were once in darkness—dead in our sins and without hope. We thank You for saving us through the blood of Jesus Christ.

Lord, we lift before You the people around us who are still blinded by the enemy and bound by sin. Open their eyes so that they may see the glory of Christ. Break every chain of addiction, deception, and fear. Set free those who are entangled in occult practices and spiritual darkness. By Your Holy Spirit, convict their hearts of sin and lead them to repentance and faith.

We especially pray for [names]. Have mercy on them, Lord. Bring them out of darkness and into Your marvelous light.

Make us, Your church, faithful witnesses. Fill us with love rather than fear; with compassion rather than pride. Open doors for us and give us bold words to share the Good News about Jesus.

We pray with confidence because Christ has triumphed over sin, death, and the devil.

In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray.

Amen.

Scripture To Memorize

"Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers!
For they will soon fade like the grass and wither like the green herb.
Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.
Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act.
He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.
Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!
Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.
For the evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land.
In just a little while, the wicked will be no more; though you look carefully at his place, he will not be there."
Psalm 37:1-10
