The Prayer Life of a Christian

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.” — Ephesians 6:10–11

Every year, as Halloween approaches, we see more clearly how modern culture can romanticize themes of death, fear, darkness, and the occult. For some, it is simply entertainment; for others, it is part of modern culture; and some consciously engage in occult and spiritual practices.

How Should Christians Respond to This Season?

Scripture does not call us to live in fear of spiritual darkness. On the contrary, the Apostle Paul says, “Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.” Therefore, our primary focus should not be on fear, panic, or even on discussing Halloween. Our focus should be on God’s Word, spiritual discernment, and prayer.

Scripture calls us to spiritual warfare, and therefore every Christian should put on the whole armor of God. Prayer is not an optional part of the Christian life; it is one of the primary ways a Christian remains dependent on God and stands firm in spiritual battle.

During the Halloween season, it is especially important to focus our prayers in three areas: praying for ourselves, for our families, and for those who are living in darkness.

1) PRAY FOR YOURSELF: BE STRONG IN THE LORD

Paul begins with these words: “Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might" (Ephesians 6:10). Notice that the text does not say, “Be strong in yourself.” Our spiritual strength is not found in our ability to resist evil, but in the Lord.

We can easily fall into two extremes: fear or overconfidence.

Fear is when we begin to think so much about spiritual darkness that we forget about the authority of Christ. On the other hand, overconfidence is when we think that spiritual warfare does not concern us and that we have nothing to fear.

Scripture calls us to something different: to remain watchful and to trust in the Lord.

Therefore, during this season, we need to pay especially close attention to our own spiritual lives. Pray: “Lord, strengthen me with Your power. Guard my heart from fear, curiosity about spiritual darkness, and any compromise with sin. Help me remain in Your Word and see everything through the truth of the Gospel.”

We are commanded: “Put on the whole armor of God.” This is not simply a beautiful illustration. It describes the practical life of a Christian. So the question for every Christian is: To what extent does my daily life reflect what I call the armor of God? If we want to be spiritually prepared during the Halloween season, we need not simply talk more about spiritual warfare—we need to abide more deeply in God.

2) PRAY FOR YOUR FAMILY: KEEP YOUR HOME IN THE LIGHT OF CHRIST

It is especially important to pray for our children. Children and teenagers encounter an enormous amount of information every day through the internet, social media, movies, games, and their surroundings. Therefore, it is not enough for parents simply to say, “You can’t do that.” We need to teach our children to distinguish between good and evil through God’s Word.

Let the approach of Halloween become an opportunity to talk with our children about spiritual realities. Explain to them that we should not romanticize evil.

We do not play around with occultism. We do not turn to fortune-telling or other spiritual practices that contradict God’s Word. We should not turn spiritual darkness into harmless entertainment. At the same time, it is important to explain to our children not only what we reject, but also Whom we belong to.

We belong to Jesus Christ. He is the light of the world. He has conquered sin and death. He has authority over every spiritual power. Therefore, during these days, a Christian home should not be a home of fear, but a home of prayer, God’s Word, and hope in Christ.

Parents can pray together with their children: “Lord, guard our hearts and our home. Give our children wisdom to distinguish between good and evil. Help us not to fear the darkness around us, but to trust in You and live in the light of Your Word.”

It is also important to pray for one another within the family.

Husbands, pray for your wives. Wives, pray for your husbands. Parents, pray for your children. Children, pray for your parents. May the family not simply know about spiritual warfare, but learn together to turn to God in prayer.

3) PRAY FOR PEOPLE IN DARKNESS: BE THE LIGHT

There is another important danger: we can become so focused on what is happening around us that we stop seeing the people. But behind every house are people. Jesus said, “You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). Therefore, our prayer should not only be, “Lord, protect us from the darkness,” but also, “Lord, bring Your light to the people who are living in darkness.”

Instead of simply criticizing the culture around us, let us pray for the people who live around us.

Let us pray for our neighbors. Let us pray for our coworkers. Let us pray for families. Let us pray that the Lord would open people’s eyes to their sin and show them their need for a Savior. Let us pray for opportunities to share the Gospel.

This is where it is especially important to remember that spiritual warfare should not turn a Christian into someone who is simply against something. We are called to bring people the truth and hope of the Gospel.

Prayer should not be our emergency button that we press only when danger appears.

Prayer is a way of life for the Christian. We pray when things are peaceful, and we pray when things are difficult. We pray for protection, and we pray for spiritual steadfastness. I believe we should also pray for opportunities to testify about Christ. Therefore, the approach of Halloween can become, for our church, not a time of fearful anxiety, but a time of intensified prayer. Let this be a time when we once again remind our hearts that our struggle is not against people, but against the spiritual forces of evil (Ephesians 6:12).

Let us be watchful, dear brothers and sisters.

Let us guard our families and establish ourselves in God’s Word. Let us pray for one another and ask God to use us so that the light of the Gospel may shine in the darkness.

Scripture To Memorize

"Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers!
For they will soon fade like the grass and wither like the green herb.
Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.
Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act.
He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.
Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!
Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.
For the evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land."
Psalm 37:1-9
