Millenia prior, Solomon wrote the parallel, “For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow” (Ecc. 1:18, KJV). You would surely agree, the more you know, the more you have to fear. So shall we stay ignorant? Surely not! You already know that the blissful ignorance of the child can lead to great personal harm without the watching eye of the parent.

For children, ignorance is a glad season of life, but for those who can tell their right from their left, ignorance is no longer acceptable. You know from experience that for certain things, “I didn’t know,” will not fly. The policeman will still give you a ticket.

We are continuing our article series, A Call to Prayer During the Halloween Season, and today we are directing our prayer on behalf of those who have eyes but do not see and ears but do not hear—the ignorant and naive—those who do not see the reality of the spiritual world.

As has been mentioned in previous articles, our culture is increasingly attracted to the spooky, dark, and wretched. And what’s most scary is the ease and flippancy of so many who participate. They just do not understand, but we are dealing with matters that pertain to life and death. Eternal life and eternal death. The stakes couldn’t be higher.

We must pray that the God who opened our eyes would open the eyes of those around us. We believe that those in darkness will stay in darkness unless the God of light shines into their hearts to see the only way out of the darkness—through Christ (2 Cor 4:6).

Christian, you who are in the light, look around and notice those around you who are still in darkness. Are you ready to pray for your children? Family? Relatives? Neighbors? Coworkers? Fellow church members? Fellow image-bearers in the world?

Pray for the innocently ignorant and direct them to knowledge
Proverbs 22:3 says, “The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it.”

The mortal danger is that when it comes to spiritual blindness, the suffering is eternal and irreversible. We must warn those around us that the building is on fire, else they will die.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction” (Pr 1:7).

How then will they have a fear of the Lord? “How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching” (Rom 10:14)?

Lack of knowledge is indeed a great hindrance to coming to the light, but it is never a valid excuse. “For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse” (Rom 1:19-20). Creation testifies enough to condemn but not to save.

This is what drives us to prayer: people, eternal souls, are surely perishing in their ignorance as the day of judgment nears, but the knowledge of the gospel is freely offered to those who will hear it. Pray that those who do not know the truth would come to know it, and respond when God sends you to preach the gospel to them. “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news” (Rom 10:15)!

Pray for the willfully ignorant with humility
Lack of knowledge is only one side of the coin—the other side is that sinful flesh “suppresses the truth in unrighteousness” (Rom 1:18). It is never simply a lack of knowledge that keeps people in darkness. Satan is hard at work “[blinding] the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ” (2 Cor 4:4). Both the devil and corrupted humanity fight and desire to stay in darkness.

We pray for these people because no amount of human willpower is able to make the dead come to life. Salvation is truly the miraculous work and gift of God (Eph 2:1-9). There is absolutely no other way to move from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light without the gracious hand of God performing the miracle (Col 1:13-14; 2:13).

It’s possible to forget and underestimate just how dead we were and what a miracle it is that God made us alive. This is why we pray with humility for those who are ignorant and naive. We do not save, God saves. Recognize that at one time you too walked in the passions of the flesh and were ignorant of the ways of God, and yet he showed you mercy and grace.

Conclusion
As we see people around us celebrate darkness, may we not look down upon them as ignorant fools, but may we realize that at once we were in the same ship of ignorance headed toward the abyss. May we be driven to our knees in prayer for boldness to then jump to our feet and proclaim the gospel that is able to “make [one] wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus” (2 Tim 3:15).

Announcements

Continue supporting the churches working among the people who have suffered from the war in Ukraine.

Give

Scripture To Memorize

"Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers!
For they will soon fade like the grass and wither like the green herb.
Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.
Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act.
He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.
Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!
Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath!

Give

Many consider it harmless entertainment. But Christians should be honest. The culture around us is becoming increasingly fascinated with occultism, the demonic, and darkness. Behind the costumes and decorations lies a spiritual reality that the Bible takes seriously.

Scripture does not call us to be afraid, nor does it call us to look down on our neighbors. It calls us to pray. Most of the people around us are not our enemies. They are captives. The Apostle Paul writes that “the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God."(2 Corinthians 4:4).

This is a time that reminds us how dark the world is. And it also reminds us how brightly the Gospel shines.

The Seriousness of Darkness

The Bible soberly describes life apart from Christ:

Spiritually dead: “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked” (Ephesians 2:1–2).

In bondage: “Everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin” (John 8:34).

Blind and lost: “People loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil” (John 3:19).

Captive: Unbelievers are caught in “the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will” (2 Timothy 2:26).

This is not simply a description of “bad people out there.” This was true of every one of us until Christ found us. Remembering this keeps us humble and makes our prayers compassionate.

The Hope of the Gospel

Darkness never has the final word. “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:5).

Jesus came “to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed” (Luke 4:18). At the cross, He “disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him” (Colossians 2:15). God “has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son” (Colossians 1:13).

No addiction, no involvement in the occult, and no rebellion is stronger than the Savior. If He saved us, He can save anyone.

How to Pray

1. Pray That God Would Open Blind Eyes
Only God can give spiritual sight. Ask Him to shine in people’s hearts “to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (2 Corinthians 4:6).

2. Pray for Conviction and Repentance
Ask the Holy Spirit to convict the world “concerning sin and righteousness and judgment” (John 16:8). Pray that God would grant people “repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth” and that they would escape “the snare of the devil” (2 Timothy 2:25–26).

3. Pray for Those Involved in Occult Practices and Spiritual Deception
Pray for those involved in witchcraft, tarot and other forms of divination, those who consult psychics and mediums, those drawn to spiritism, or anything else that opens the door to darkness (Deuteronomy 18:10–12). Ask the Lord to break the power of deception and set people free, as He did in Ephesus, where new believers publicly burned their books of magic (Acts 19:18–20).

4. Pray for Those Bound by Sinful Habits
Many people are enslaved by addictions, sexual sin, anger, bitterness, fear, or despair. Pray that they would encounter the One who says, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36).

5. Pray for Specific People by Name
Make your prayers personal. Think of relatives, neighbors, coworkers, classmates, and the children who will knock on your door this month. Write down their names and pray for them every day throughout October.

6. Pray for Courage and Love in the Church
Ask God to make us light, not merely critics (Matthew 5:14–16). Pray for opportunities to share the Gospel “with gentleness and respect” (1 Peter 3:15). Pray that our homes would be warm, welcoming, and filled with the love of Christ.

Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.” — Ephesians 6:10–11

Every year, as Halloween approaches, we see more clearly how modern culture can romanticize themes of death, fear, darkness, and the occult. For some, it is simply entertainment; for others, it is part of modern culture; and some consciously engage in occult and spiritual practices.

How Should Christians Respond to This Season?

Scripture does not call us to live in fear of spiritual darkness. On the contrary, the Apostle Paul says, “Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.” Therefore, our primary focus should not be on fear, panic, or even on discussing Halloween. Our focus should be on God’s Word, spiritual discernment, and prayer.

Scripture calls us to spiritual warfare, and therefore every Christian should put on the whole armor of God. Prayer is not an optional part of the Christian life; it is one of the primary ways a Christian remains dependent on God and stands firm in spiritual battle.

During the Halloween season, it is especially important to focus our prayers in three areas: praying for ourselves, for our families, and for those who are living in darkness.

1) PRAY FOR YOURSELF: BE STRONG IN THE LORD

Paul begins with these words: “Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might" (Ephesians 6:10). Notice that the text does not say, “Be strong in yourself.” Our spiritual strength is not found in our ability to resist evil, but in the Lord.

We can easily fall into two extremes: fear or overconfidence.

Fear is when we begin to think so much about spiritual darkness that we forget about the authority of Christ. On the other hand, overconfidence is when we think that spiritual warfare does not concern us and that we have nothing to fear.

Scripture calls us to something different: to remain watchful and to trust in the Lord.

Therefore, during this season, we need to pay especially close attention to our own spiritual lives. Pray: “Lord, strengthen me with Your power. Guard my heart from fear, curiosity about spiritual darkness, and any compromise with sin. Help me remain in Your Word and see everything through the truth of the Gospel.”

We are commanded: “Put on the whole armor of God.” This is not simply a beautiful illustration. It describes the practical life of a Christian. So the question for every Christian is: To what extent does my daily life reflect what I call the armor of God? If we want to be spiritually prepared during the Halloween season, we need not simply talk more about spiritual warfare—we need to abide more deeply in God.

2) PRAY FOR YOUR FAMILY: KEEP YOUR HOME IN THE LIGHT OF CHRIST

It is especially important to pray for our children. Children and teenagers encounter an enormous amount of information every day through the internet, social media, movies, games, and their surroundings. Therefore, it is not enough for parents simply to say, “You can’t do that.” We need to teach our children to distinguish between good and evil through God’s Word.

Let the approach of Halloween become an opportunity to talk with our children about spiritual realities. Explain to them that we should not romanticize evil.

We do not play around with occultism. We do not turn to fortune-telling or other spiritual practices that contradict God’s Word. We should not turn spiritual darkness into harmless entertainment. At the same time, it is important to explain to our children not only what we reject, but also Whom we belong to.

We belong to Jesus Christ. He is the light of the world. He has conquered sin and death. He has authority over every spiritual power. Therefore, during these days, a Christian home should not be a home of fear, but a home of prayer, God’s Word, and hope in Christ.

Parents can pray together with their children: “Lord, guard our hearts and our home. Give our children wisdom to distinguish between good and evil. Help us not to fear the darkness around us, but to trust in You and live in the light of Your Word.”

It is also important to pray for one another within the family.

Husbands, pray for your wives. Wives, pray for your husbands. Parents, pray for your children. Children, pray for your parents. May the family not simply know about spiritual warfare, but learn together to turn to God in prayer.

3) PRAY FOR PEOPLE IN DARKNESS: BE THE LIGHT

There is another important danger: we can become so focused on what is happening around us that we stop seeing the people. But behind every house are people. Jesus said, “You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). Therefore, our prayer should not only be, “Lord, protect us from the darkness,” but also, “Lord, bring Your light to the people who are living in darkness.”

Instead of simply criticizing the culture around us, let us pray for the people who live around us.

Let us pray for our neighbors. Let us pray for our coworkers. Let us pray for families. Let us pray that the Lord would open people’s eyes to their sin and show them their need for a Savior. Let us pray for opportunities to share the Gospel.

This is where it is especially important to remember that spiritual warfare should not turn a Christian into someone who is simply against something. We are called to bring people the truth and hope of the Gospel.

Prayer should not be our emergency button that we press only when danger appears.

Prayer is a way of life for the Christian. We pray when things are peaceful, and we pray when things are difficult. We pray for protection, and we pray for spiritual steadfastness. I believe we should also pray for opportunities to testify about Christ. Therefore, the approach of Halloween can become, for our church, not a time of fearful anxiety, but a time of intensified prayer.

Give

This is one of the unique characteristics of the Word of God—it is deeply interconnected, and there is a powerful relationship between the earlier and later texts.

When we consider that the Bible has about 40 human authors, beginning with Moses who lived about 1,500 years before Jesus Christ and ending with the apostle John, AD 90, and yet we see complete harmony and a strong connection throughout, we are compelled to recognize that there is One Author above all these human authors who inspired them all to record one harmonious, inerrant, and purposeful message to humanity.

Here are several examples of how the New Testament sheds light on certain details of the Old Testament, not distorting or changing them, but adding to them and completing the mosaic of the Holy Scripture:

Angels were involved in the giving of the Law (Acts 7:53; Gal. 3:19; Heb. 2:2)

Michael the archangel disputed with the devil over the body of Moses, but he did not dare to pronounce judgment against him (Jude 9)

Enoch prophesied about the coming judgment of the Lord upon the ungodly, in the presence of angels (Jude 14-15)

The rock from which water came followed Israel in the wilderness (at least for some period of time) (1 Cor. 10:4)

The names of the Egyptian magicians who opposed Moses were Jannes and Jambres (2 Tim. 3:8)

I would especially like to highlight one of our all-time-favorite passages of Scripture at GFC:

“In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” (Acts 20:35)

This statement does not appear in any of the four Gospels. Yet, judging by the way Paul uses it, he expects and assumes that his listeners all knew this phrase once spoken by Jesus Christ. Paul speaks of these words as something that was already in the memory of his listeners. Why? Because this saying was well known and frequently quoted. It was so widely known that none of the Gospel writers considered in necessary to include it in their accounts of the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. But that does not make this statement any less significant! Since the apostle Paul mentions it, and it has been documented for us in Scripture, we confidently accept it as an authoritative and true statement once spoken by Jesus Christ.

My encouragement to all of us is this: Be attentive and scrupulous students of Scripture! Notice the details. Pray that God would open your eyes to the beauty, interconnectedness, and most importantly, the practical nature of the Holy Scripture! And do not forget that it is more blessed to serve, to give, and to sacrifice for the Lord and for the good of those around us than simply to receive! This is at the very heart of the Gospel:

“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45)

Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!"
Psalm 37:1-7

Upcoming Services and Meetings

Thursday (7:30 PM) – Prayer Service

Saturday (8:00 AM) – Men’s Prayer Breakfast

Sunday Services:
o Worship Service in Russian at 9:00 AM
o Worship Service in English at 11:15 AM

Ангелы были вовлечены в передачу Закона (Деян., 7:53; Гал. 3:19; Евр. 2:2);

Михаил Архангел спорил с диаволом о Моисеевом теле, но не смел произнести укоризненного суда (Иуды, 9);

Пророчество Еноха о приближающемся суде Господа над нечестивыми в присутствии ангелов (Иуды, 13-14);

Камень, из которого была извлечена вода, следовал за Израилем по пустыне (как минимум какое-то время) (1 Кор., 10:4);

At this time, we especially want to direct our prayers to God and our attention to those brothers and sisters who were baptized. Please take a few minutes this week to pray for everyone who was baptized in the following areas:

- Growing in prayer
- Continually abiding in the Word (reading, studying, and memorizing it)
- Longing for fellowship with the saints (being part of either a home group or a youth ministry)
- Desiring to serve and be useful (becoming involved in serving others)
- Personal holiness (fighting sin and pursuing sanctification)
- Evangelism (sharing their faith with others)
- Generosity and sacrifice (learning, as they are able, to participate financially in the life of the church)
- Growing in love for the Lord and for others
- Learning to recognize and rejoice in God’s grace

These elements are present in the life of every believer, but it is especially important for those who are taking their first steps in the faith to establish right, biblical habits and practices at the beginning of their spiritual journey.

An interest in our personal well-being, convenience, and comfort is characteristic of all of us because we are in the flesh. But when we look at Scripture, we find another, no less important principle for the life and thinking of a Christian—radical devotion to the Lord. Not always, but often, this devotion will go against our comfort and convenience in life. And it is precisely at that moment that the genuineness of our commitment to God is truly tested!

I do not remember where or from whom I have heard this comparison, but here it is: the Church can become either an aircraft carrier or a cruise ship. What is the point of such a comparison? A cruise ship is built with one purpose—to help people relax, have a good time, enjoy various conveniences, and be entertained. An aircraft carrier is built for a completely different purpose—to be a powerful instrument to fight the enemy and, literally, participate in military operations. An aircraft carrier transports aircraft to strategic parts of the world so that they can make necessary intrusions into enemy territory and defend the interests of their nation.

The church is not a cruise ship where everyone gathers to have a wonderful time, enjoy entertainment, experience a good atmosphere, and get some rest. The church is an aircraft carrier, where everyone works to defend the country against an aggressor and even to reclaim territory from the enemy. This is exactly what the church does in the spiritual realm! Christ did not create the Church so that we could have a good time, but that we would be engaged in spiritual warfare for the souls of sinners in this world.

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matt. 5:14–16)

“And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” (Matt. 16:18)

“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me…” (Matt. 16:24)

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…” (Matt. 28:19)

“No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.” (Luke 16:13)

“By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.” (John 15:8)

“Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, and not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God. For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake, engaged in the same conflict that you saw I had and now hear that I still have.” (Phil. 1:27–30)

Beings a light in this world, standing against the evil forces, denying ourselves, making disciples, devoting ourselves exclusively to God, bearing fruit, suffering, and engaging in the struggle—this is not a leisurely stroll or a vacation on a cruise ship. It is a real battle in which the church (the aircraft carrier) participates under the leadership of its Commander—Jesus Christ!

When this way of thinking penetrates deeply into our hearts, we will find it easier to endure disagreements within the church. We will find it easier to bear with the mistakes of others, their imperfections, and even those aspects of church practice that may be inconvenient for us.

If I understand that we are currently engages in military operations, and the battle is a matter of life and death, then it would be completely unacceptable for me, at such a time, to rearrange the furniture simple for better comfort. I will be supplying ammunition so that the enemy’s attack can be repelled in time. I will not devote all my attention to improving the comfort of my stay on the ship (although, we do think about this and will take care of it), but I will do everything I can to help the church win as many people as possible for Christ!

I invite you to pray and, in prayer, before God these questions: Where am I? How do I view the church? What are my goals? What kind of fruit am I bearing? Give the Holy Spirit the opportunity to show you where and in what areas you need to make adjustments in your life. And most importantly, trusting in God’s grace, change your convictions, intentions, and objectives.

Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart."
Psalm 37:1-4

Upcoming Services and Meetings

Thursday (7:30PM) – Prayer Service

Sunday Services:

Worship Service in Russian at 9:00AM

Worship Service in English at 11:15AM

Give

This is the subject of our brief appeal to the church.

Recently, an interview was held with all those who desire to receive water baptism. All members of our local church who wished to attend were invited to this meeting with the elders and those wishing to be baptized. We want to thank everyone who was there. We are glad that you care for the church this way!

But your involvement, dear GFC members, does not end there. We would like you to take two more important additional steps in participating in and helping to build up our church!

First, below is a list of everyone who is preparing to receive water baptism. Please take time to pray for these brothers and sisters. Pray that it would be a very thoughtful and carefully considered step in their lives. Pray that through their testimony, many more will hear about the Lord’s power to save sinners.

Second, as you look over the list of these brothers and sisters, if you have questions or concerns, we encourage you to approach either those who are preparing for baptism or the elder of the church. It is very important that the testimony or faith of these brothers and sisters does not create confusion or raise questions for anyone. If there are questions, we should take time to look into the issue and resolve the matter before the day of baptism.

Mary Malynovskyy
Daniel Chepurny
Milana Khashchuk
Gloria Giruk
Evelyn Bublik
Evelyn Makovey
Artem Somichev
Mark Tesman
Jasmine Lobkov
Eva Antonova
Evelina Antonova
Emily Lapatski
Joseph Kurbatov
Aaron Giruk
Matthew Chorney
Aliyah Utyuzh
Tim Petrov

Announcements

Continue supporting the churches working among the people who have suffered from the war in Ukraine.

Give

Scripture To Memorize

"Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers!
For they will soon fade like the grass and wither like the green herb."
Psalm 37:1-2

Upcoming Services and Meetings

Thursday (7:30PM) – Prayer Service

Saturday (8:00AM) – Women's Prayer Breakfast

Sunday Services:

Worship Service in Russian at 9:00AM

Worship Service in English at 11:15AM

Mary Malynovskyy
Daniel Chepurny
Milana Khashchuk
Gloria Giruk
Evelyn Bublik
Evelyn Makovey
Artem Somichev
Mark Tesman
Jasmine Lobkov
Eva Antonova
Evelina Antonova
Emily Lapatski
Joseph Kurbatov
Aaron Giruk
Matthew Chorney
Aliyah Utyuzh
Tim Petrov

Give

Give

We have been studying the books of Acts with our church Sunday after Sunday for more than a year now. For the past two months we have been preaching through chapters 13 and 14 where Paul and Barnabas were sent off by the Holy Spirit and the Antioch church to preach the Gospel, make disciples, and plant churches and that is exactly what they did! The journey was long, the sacrifice was great, but the results of God’s saving work through them was greater! As Paul and Barnabas traveled from town to town, from city to city, they preached the Gospel, made disciples, appointed elders, and planted churches (Acts 14:21-23). They did not do it of their own efforts, strategies, planning, nor communication skills, but were used by the Spirit to accomplish the work of God which is building up churches.

We see Church planting take place throughout the book of Acts. Some church planters even outline the whole book of Acts in church planting terms. For example, Ed Stetzer and Daniel Im in their book “Planting Missional Churches” present the following outline of Acts:

1. Church Planting in Jerusalem (Acts 1-7)
2. Church Planting in Judea and Samaria (Acts 8-12)
3. Church Planting in the World (Acts 11-28)

While we do not have a direct Biblical command to go and plant churches, we see it modeled in the book of Acts and is a result of Holy Spirit’s saving work. What Paul, Barnabas, and later, their ministry partners have been tasked with was to preach the Gospel, make disciples, and as a result believers were gathered and formed into local churches (Acts 14:21-23). While this is not the only way and pattern for church planting, it is a Biblical one! Preaching the Gospel (Acts 1:8) and making disciples of all nations (Matt. 28:18-19) makes up the Great Commission! When the Gospel is preached and disciples are made – churches are planted.

Announcements

Continue supporting the churches working among the people who have suffered from the war in Ukraine.

Give

Scripture To Memorize

"And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me."
For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it.
For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?
For what can a man give in return for his soul?
For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels."
Mark 8:34-38

Upcoming Services and Meetings

Thursday (6:30PM) – Prayer Service

Saturday (8:00AM) – Men's Prayer Breakfast

Sunday Services:

Worship Service in Russian at 9:00AM

Worship Service in English at 11:15AM

The power was out.

You may perhaps remember this night—it was January 8, 2023. And more importantly, it was Sunday. How were we to gather as a church?

Thankfully our building was still standing and with the help of a generator and a couple loudspeakers, we were able to come together in our gym. And then the question became, how were we to sing without lyrics?

As always, God had provided—gfcsongs.com.

Just over a month earlier, in November of 2022, God had prompted the heart of a young man in our church who had the brilliant idea to create a digital hymnal website. After some brainstorming and a quick prototype, gfcsongs.com was born! Then on December 29, 2022 all of our church song lyrics were uploaded and ready to be used. But we wondered, how would we get the word out about this new resource?

That cold winter morning was the perfect opportunity to try out this new digital hymnal. The gathered church had easy access to the right lyrics and was able to sing together. Praise the Lord!

The website gfcsongs.com exists for your benefit, brothers and sisters. The songs we sing every Sunday are meant to be taken home and sung more than just once a week. These songs are chosen specifically for their singability, richness of theology, and ability to serve you in your everyday life.

This newsletter is to inform you that every song we have in our church repertoire now comes with chords! The goal is to enable every small group and every family to be able to pick up a guitar and play/sing together. You can do this by clicking the little music icon next to a song name.

Once you open the site, you will find tags at the top: rGFC, eGFC, and Other.

rGFC: All the songs we sing at our 9:00am service (in Russian).

eGFC: All the songs we sing at our 11:15am service (in English).

Other: Other good songs you may find useful.

You can expect now that every song you hear on Sunday morning will be immediately available with words and chords for your use for family worship or other gatherings. Check out this past Sunday’s new song: Psalm 34 (Taste and See).

To make it easier to access the site, I highly recommend adding it as an app to your home screen. Follow these steps:

Should you run into any difficulties or have ideas to make it better, please talk to Jacob Voronin, or me, Max Nedorezov.

Other.

Sunday worship brings us together as one church family, but home groups give us the opportunity to know one another personally, grow stronger spiritually, and share in each other’s lives.

This year, we invite every individual and every family at Grace Family Church to take the next step: join a home group.

The Example of the Early Church
From the very beginning, believers gathered not only in large corporate meetings but also in homes. Acts 2:42 tells us that the first Christians devoted themselves continually to the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, the breaking of bread, and prayer. Acts 2:46 also says that they gathered “from house to house.”

Home groups are not simply another church activity. They are a practical way to live out the biblical community life we see in the New Testament.

In a home, around a table or in a living room, faith becomes personal. Together, we open God’s Word, pray about real needs, share meals, ask honest questions, and encourage one another to follow Jesus more faithfully.

Together, We Grow Better
Corporate worship is incredibly important, but it cannot replace the relationships that develop when believers walk through life alongside one another. In a home group, people have the opportunity not only to hear a sermon but also to discuss Scripture and apply it to everyday life.

The Bible repeatedly calls believers to care for one another:

“Love one another” (John 13:34–35)

“Bear one another’s burdens” (Galatians 6:2)

“Encourage one another and build each other up” (1 Thessalonians 5:11)

“Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds” (Hebrews 10:24–25)

“Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another” (James 5:16)

These commands are difficult to live out from a distance. Home groups create space for genuine fellowship, prayer, mutual accountability, hospitality, and encouragement. While Scripture does not prescribe one specific modern format for small groups, groups like these provide a natural setting for living out the many biblical “one another” commands.

A Place Where You Are Known
You can attend church regularly and still feel lonely. A home group helps a large church community become a caring spiritual family.

In a smaller circle of people, it is easier to notice, understand, and support one another. When someone is facing illness, grief, family difficulties, financial struggles, or spiritual discouragement, a home group can respond with prayer, practical help, and faithful friendship.

Romans 12:15 says, “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.” This is the beauty of Christian fellowship: we do not have to carry life’s joys and burdens alone.

A Place to Grow as Disciples
Discipleship is not just about gaining knowledge; it is about learning to obey Jesus in every area of life. In a home group, God’s Word moves from the pages of the Bible into everyday conversation:

How do we forgive someone who has hurt us?

How do we raise our children in the faith?

How do we honor Christ in our work and finances?

How do we walk through trials without losing hope?

How do we share the Gospel with our friends and neighbors?

When believers speak the truth in love, pray together, and learn from one another, the whole church becomes stronger. God uses every member of the church—not just pastors and leaders—to encourage and build up the Body of Christ.

A Place for Mission
Home groups can also become a welcoming doorway for people who may not yet be ready to attend a large church service. Sharing a meal, having an honest conversation, praying together, and extending a genuine invitation can open hearts to the love of Christ.

Jesus said, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:35). When our homes are filled with biblical truth, genuine love, and practical care, the Gospel becomes visible.

Take the Next Step This Year
Don’t wait for the “perfect” time. You don’t need to know everyone, have all the answers, or be at a certain stage of life.

Give

Here at Grace Kids Bible School, we also have our own preparations underway. Lots of work goes on behind the scenes before students even step foot into church on the first day, and our church is blessed with an incredible team of volunteers dedicating their gifts and resources to this ministry’s advancement.

Amidst all the excitement and preparation, I have come to really appreciate the constant reminders from our children’s ministry pastor to stop and ask ourselves,“Why do we do what we do?” And so I extend the same question to you.

To the kids — why do you come to Kids Bible School every Thursday night? Is it because you will get to see all your friends? Or did your teacher promise to give out your favorite snacks? Or are you excited to show them your coloring page or say your memory verse from last week’s lesson? Or do you look forward to learning something new about who God is?

To the parents — why do you bring your children week after week? Is it out of duty because that is what good parents do? Or because you can finally get a night off in an otherwise busy week? Or do you look forward to them telling you in the car what they learned about Jesus? Or is it the daily family devotionals during the week that bring your family closer together and closer to God?

To the volunteers — why do you come to church and serve? Is it because you love kids, their silly antics, and their fun-loving nature? Or because you are gifted in putting together the most interesting and engaging lesson plans? Or that you have such a big heart to deal with the “difficult” kids? Or that you can think of no better use of your gifts and time than to bring the Gospel to these little ones?

Nearly all of these are questions I have had to ask myself in analyzing my heart over the years, and, with time, I came to my conclusion. Years ago, I read an excerpt from a Charles Spurgeon sermon on this very subject, and it has stuck with me ever since. Here is what he said:

“The true minister is he who can preach Christ… If Christ crucified is the great delight of his soul, the very marrow of his teaching, the fatness of his ministry, he has proved his calling as an ambassador of Christ…
Oh, to speak of Christ alone! — to be tied and bound to this one theme forever; to speak only of Jesus and of the amazing Love of the glorious Son of God, who, ‘though He was rich, yet for our sakes became poor.’ This is the Subject which is both ‘seed for the sower and bread for the eater.’ This is the live Coal for the lips of the preacher, and the master Key to the heart of the hearer! This is the Tune for the minstrels of earth, and the Song for the harpers of Heaven! Lord, teach it to us more and more, and we will tell it out to others!”

Children’s ministry exists to preach Christ, that God would be glorified and the lives of everyone involved - student, parent, and teacher - would be transformed. For the kids, this ministry exists for you to come to know who Jesus is, what He has done for you, and why He is far more precious than anything else in this world. For the parents, this ministry exists as a tool in your parenting arsenal, to support and encourage you in your daily efforts to raise up the next generation to know and love God. For the volunteers, this ministry exists for you to experience the sweetness of knowing who God is personally, learning to trust Him even when you cannot see the fruits of your labors, and recognizing that the best takeaway that a child may have at the end of the lesson is that they saw Jesus more brightly and clearly than ever before.

In other words, we exist to show them Jesus, and I can think of no greater honor or better calling than that.

****
Student registration for Grace Kids Bible School for the 2026-2027 school year is now open!

This is a question every Christian faces. We profess that God is sovereign, wise, and good. We believe that He rules over everything that happens. Yet as soon as circumstances slip beyond our control, anxiety, fear, and the desire to take control of our own lives begin to rise in our hearts. The problem does not begin with our circumstances—it begins in our hearts.

Who Is in Control of My Life?
Whenever our plans fall apart, a question arises: Who has the right to determine what is truly good for me? This was the very temptation Adam faced. The serpent did not urge him to turn away from God. Instead, he tempted him to decide for himself what was good and what was evil. Since then, human nature has not changed. We are willing to trust the Lord as long as His will aligns with our own. But faith is not the ability to stay in control—quite the opposite. Faith is trust.

Imagine a small child walking beside a loving father. The child does not know the way and does not understand why his father has chosen this particular path. Yet he calmly holds his father's hand because he knows his father. That is what true trust in God looks like.

The Illusion of Independence
The modern world tells us, “Be strong. Rely only on yourself.” But Scripture reminds us that human beings were never created to be independent. Every day we depend on air, water, food, roads, our health, and the people around us. Why, then, do we imagine that our relationship with God is the one area where we can live on our own?

One of the greatest idols of the human heart is the desire to be in control. We want to control the future, change other people, and shape our lives according to our own plans. But Scripture reminds us that there is only one Sovereign over the universe—the Lord. And that is not a reason to fear; it is a source of profound comfort.

Sometimes God Closes Doors
We pray, make plans, and do our best, yet sometimes God closes doors before us. In those moments, we naturally ask, “Why?” But often, God protects us through the very obstacles that disappoint us.

Balaam became angry with his donkey, not realizing that it was saving his life (Numbers 22).

Saul set out for Damascus convinced that he was serving God, yet it was on that very road that the Lord completely transformed his life (Acts 9).

Looking back, many of us have thanked God for the very doors that once seemed unfairly closed. More often than not, God's obstacles turn out to be God's protection.

God's Love and Trials
At times, a dangerous thought creeps into our hearts: "If God truly loved me, He would never have allowed this to happen." But God's love is not always expressed in the ways we expect.

A loving father does not grant every desire of his child. A caring physician may cause pain in order to save a life. In the same way, the Lord sometimes leads us through trials to draw us closer to Himself. God's purpose is not to make our lives comfortable, but to make us more like Christ. That is why trials are not evidence of God's absence. More often than not, they are a testimony of His loving care as our Father.

The Danger of Comparison
Comparing ourselves to others is both dangerous and sinful.

Why do others seem to have it easier? Why are their prayers answered so quickly? Why does my obedience seem to be met with hardship? Asaph wrestled with these very questions (Psalm 73). As long as he kept his eyes on other people, his heart was filled with bitterness. Everything changed when he entered the presence of God. The Lord did not change Asaph's circumstances—He changed Asaph himself. And that is how God still works today. Therefore, the best thing we can do is run to the Lord. Not to avoid or ignore our trials, but to trust in God and rest in His sovereign rule. Trials always drive us to seek refuge. Some run to their work. Others turn to entertainment. Still others retreat into anger, resentment, or despair.

But God invites us to run to Him—with all our questions, fears, and tears. That is what David did throughout the Psalms. That is how Job prayed. That is how Jesus Christ cried out to the Father in the Garden of Gethsemane. True peace does not come when the storm ends. It comes when Christ is with us in the midst of the storm.

A Look at Calvary
The greatest evidence of God's sovereignty is found at Calvary. To the disciples, it seemed that everything was lost— betrayal, an unjust trial, the cross, and death. Yet at that very moment, God was accomplishing the greatest work of salvation the world has ever known. If the Lord could turn the greatest evil into the greatest good, then He is certainly able to use our trials to fulfill His perfect purpose. That is why the Christian's hope is not built on the expectation that tomorrow will necessarily be easier. It is built on the certainty that Christ is sovereign over both our today and our tomorrow. His hands were pierced for our salvation, and therefore they are hands we can safely entrust with our entire lives.

Trusting in God's sovereignty is not passive resignation to circumstances. It is a deliberate and joyful confidence in a loving Father who never makes mistakes, never arrives too late, and never stops loving His children. May the Lord strengthen our hearts so that we learn to trust Him—not only when we understand His ways, but also when we can see only the next step. For it is this kind of trust that brings glory to our great God.

May God bless you, dear brothers and sisters, and may our great Lord be glorified through our steadfast trust in His sovereign rule.

Announcements

Continue supporting the churches working among the people who have suffered from the war in Ukraine.

Give

Scripture To Memorize

"And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.""
Mark 8:34

Upcoming Services and Meetings

Thursday (7:00 PM) – Prayer Meeting

Saturday (8:00 AM) – Women’s Prayer Breakfast

Sunday services:
o Worship Service in Russian at 9:00 AM
o Worship Service in English at 11:15 AM

Give

Not long ago, I lost my patience with a couple of my sons. Later, I had to ask for their forgiveness. As I reflected on what had happened—why I had raised my voice at them and what consequences this sin carries— I came to a clear realization: patience is like a concrete wall that holds in place all the instruction and influence being poured into the hearts, minds, and lives of those you serve. Remove that wall, and all the good influence begins to leak away instead of remaining in people's hearts.

Patience has the same effect in ministry. Those of you who serve in any capacity know that working with people will eventually bring you to the point where patience is required. Why? Because the people to whom we minister are sinners. And when their sin is directed personally at you— as often happens in close, soul-care ministry— you suddenly realize just how essential patience really is.

There are many biblical passages that speak of the importance and necessity of patience. But there is one text that specifically speaks about Christ's patience toward Saul (Paul) before his conversion, and how that patience impacts several different people and areas of life.

“But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.” (1 Tim. 1:16)

God saved Saul in order to display the greatness, beauty, and significance of His patience. Why His patience? Because before his conversion, Saul fiercely persecuted the church. Throughout all that time, until his encounter with Christ on the road to Damascus, he lived under the covering of God's patient forbearance. Had it not been for the Lord's patience toward him, God's righteous judgment would have fallen on him in an instant. But instead, God patiently endured Saul. It was God's patience that led him to repentance.

This is the central lesson of the passage. God's patient forbearance toward the sinner is proclaimed in salvation and leads to salvation. It is the conversion of the sinner that puts the greatness of God's patience on display.

But the passage goes on to say that the patience Christ showed to Saul serves as an example to all who would later believe in Him for eternal life. In other words, patience has a direct impact on those who watch and those who listen. Patience displayed is influence exerted.
So take encouragement, dear friends. Your patience has an impact on those around you, contributing to their salvation and to their growth in the faith.

Announcements

Continue supporting the churches working among the people who have suffered from the war in Ukraine.

Give

Scripture To Memorize

"When my soul was embittered, when I was pricked in heart,
I was brutish and ignorant; I was like a beast toward you.
Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand.
You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory.
Whom have I in heaven but you?
